It was 1985. Leg warmers and mullets were the rage. Dick was hard up. His big-league plans had failed and opening a laid-back bar full of attitude was all he could muster the strength to do. Dick’s was really his last resort.

It all began with a man named Dick and an epic failure of a fine dining project in Dallas gone awry. Thankfully, the jokes became synonymous with good food and cold beers and the first Dick’s Last Resort opened with huge success in the West End in Dallas, Texas. The chain was founded by Richard ‘Dick’ Chase and currently operates 13 locations across the United States, with venues in Florida, Tennessee, Indiana, South Carolina, Nevada, Texas, and Alabama.

The Dick’s Last Resort menu is influenced by Southern cuisine, consisting of a range of comfort food from chicken, fried shrimp, crab legs, and select seafood to steaks, burgers, and its signature barbecue pork ribs. Visitors can even attempt Dick’s ‘Big Meat Challenge’ – two large steaks, Dick’s huge 12” wiener, a macho nacho appetizer, house salad, a double portion of cheddar mashed taters, and a double order of broccoli – if managed in one hour, the culinary conqueror gets to eat for free.

From sundaes, served in a souvenir keeper bowl, to rich ‘n’ creamy strawberry or chocolate drizzle cheesecakes, there’s something to satisfy any sweet tooth. Visitors can even sample the Extreme Brownie Meltdown: fudge brownie topped with a whole Hershey’s bar, Hershey’s syrup, Heath Bar Crunch, and ice cream.

Alongside sass and Southern style dishes, guests can enjoy a range of fun cocktails like the Tropic Thunder. Captain Morgan, Malibu, Amaretto, Raspberry Liqueur, and a bold strike of gin come together for a drink that hits hard and fast; sweet fruity chaos with a kick because calm seas never made legendary nights. The beverage menu also contains a selection of 45 oz fun bowls, such as the Punch Drunk and Watermelon Wingman, as well as a selection of mason jar mixes. The Berry Royal Buzz, for example, is a wild mix of Crown Royal whiskey, cranberry juice, strawberry puree, and a splash of watermelon Red Bull to keep the chaos going. As described on the menu: ‘Sweet, fruity, and just reckless enough to fit in around here. Sip responsibly – or don’t. We’re not your mom’.

Service with sarcasm

Dick’s Last Resort doesn’t just serve good food and boozy beverages however, the team also serves a hearty helping of feisty, sarcastic banter, laughter and an experience unlike any other. In fact, Dick’s Last Resort is a bar and restaurant chain known for its staff who purposely provide service with sarcasm and maybe a smile. Indeed, the chain teaches its servers to be sarcastic. Patrons of Dick’s should expect to be insulted or placed in uncomfortable situations – in the best possible way. A staple of Dick’s is its hand-made paper hats with insults written on them, given to diners to wear during their stay.

The unique dining spots are popular with locals and tourists alike, and alongside the full bar and creative cocktail menu are flat-screen TVs showing sports events, and sometime live music at various locations.

Not for the faint of heart, Dick’s Last Resort is renowned for its over-the-top birthdays and bachelorette parties, as well as any occasion or excuse to gather friends and family. Groups can enjoy a unique experience people will be talking about long after they stumble out of the door. The team will serve guests as much food, beverages and sarcasm as they can handle. Belly up to the table and buckle up for a crazy good time, because everything’s fair game at Dick’s.

PG-plus brand of humor

To set its brand apart, Dick’s revives the edge, when appropriate, to double down on the company’s PG-plus brand of humor. “It starts with reading the table and reading the dining room,” says Joe Hartsock, current CEO and 15-year Dick’s veteran. “There are no jokes around race, religion, gender or gender identity, and no vulgar words.” Similarly, in keeping with the brand’s irreverent tone, Dick’s mascot is someone who can be perceived as “sarcastic, aware, sharp-witted, and easy-going,” he explains. “Kind of like a crazy drunk uncle: raw but still endearing.”

For fans of the brand, souvenirs, such as shot glasses, are also on offer. Likewise, merchandise, including Putting the F.U. in Fun T-shirts and tanks, and I Love Dick’s tumblers and bumper stickers, can be purchased in store or online.

Dick’s Last Resort turned failure into a bold, boisterous success story. With its irreverent humor, Southern-inspired comfort food, and no-holds-barred service, it’s more than a restaurant – it’s an unforgettable experience. Whether guests visit for the meals or the mockery, one thing’s for sure: at Dick’s, normal is never on the menu.
