FDA’s top-level warning issued for recalled tomatoes The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall, its highest risk level, for tomatoes distributed by Williams Farms Repack LLC. The recall was triggered by concerns about possible salmonella contamination and has prompted food safety alerts across the southeastern United States. Williams Farms Repack LLC, based in Lodge, South Carolina, voluntarily initiated the recall after identifying risks associated with specific lots of fresh, unpackaged tomatoes. The affected products were distributed between April 23 and April 28, 2025, to retail outlets and food service providers in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Specific tomato lots identified in the FDA advisory span several states The recalled tomatoes were marketed under the Williams Farms Repack and H&C Farms labels. Lot numbers R4467 and R4470 are associated with the affected products. These items were sold in bulk and shipped to a range of commercial and institutional buyers across three states. Consumers are urged to check product packaging and discard any tomatoes that match the lot numbers. If the product is unlabeled or the origin is uncertain, health officials recommend disposing of it to avoid risk. Salmonella infections present serious risks to certain populations Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne pathogens in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that it causes 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths each year. Typical symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, often appearing six to 72 hours after exposure. While many individuals recover without treatment, children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of complications. Steps consumers and retailers should take to reduce exposure Consumers are advised to inspect their tomatoes and dispose of any items that may be affected. Those who purchased unpackaged or loose tomatoes should be especially cautious, as a lot of information may not be readily available. Surfaces, containers, and utensils that came into contact with potentially contaminated tomatoes should be washed thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Food service establishments are also expected to review inventory records and isolate or discard the recalled products.
