The James Beard Awards, widely regarded as the highest honor in American dining, recognized some of the country’s most celebrated chefs, restaurants and hospitality professionals during a ceremony in Chicago on Monday night.

Among the biggest winners was Lei, a 28 seat wine bar in New York City’s Chinatown, which took home the award for Best New Restaurant. The restaurant has gained attention for its menu inspired by Chinese home cooking and a carefully curated wine program, helping it stand out in one of the most competitive dining markets in the United States.

The awards, presented annually by the James Beard Foundation, are often described as the Oscars of the food world. Established in 1991, the awards recognize excellence across the restaurant, beverage and hospitality sectors while highlighting emerging talent and regional culinary achievements.

Major winners take centre stage

Another major honor went to Kalaya in Philadelphia, which was named Outstanding Restaurant. The southern Thai restaurant has earned national acclaim for its bold flavors and commitment to showcasing authentic regional cuisine. The award further strengthens Philadelphia’s growing reputation as one of the country’s most exciting food destinations.

In the Outstanding Chef category, Michael Tusk of Quince in San Francisco secured one of the evening’s most prestigious awards. Tusk has long been recognized for his refined approach to California cuisine and his focus on seasonal ingredients, making Quince one of the country’s most respected fine dining establishments.

The Outstanding Restaurateur award was presented to Dana Street, whose portfolio includes Fore Street, Scales and Standard Baking Co. in Portland, Maine. The recognition highlights the impact of thoughtful restaurant leadership and long term contributions to local dining communities.

One of the night’s most memorable moments came when Adrian Torres of Maximo in West University Place, Texas, received the Emerging Chef award. During his acceptance speech, Torres spoke about his family’s immigrant background and his journey in the restaurant industry. His remarks reflected a broader theme of diversity and inclusion that was present throughout the ceremony.

Recognition beyond the kitchen

The awards also recognized excellence beyond the kitchen. Providence in Los Angeles won Outstanding Hospitality, while Kato, also in Los Angeles, received the award for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program. Portland’s Scotch Lodge was named Outstanding Bar, and Loma in Providence, Rhode Island, earned the title of Best New Bar.

Regional chef awards highlighted talent from across the country. Winners included Dave Beran of Seline in Santa Monica, Hooni Kim of Meju in Queens, Jesse Ito of Royal Sushi & Izakaya in Philadelphia and Evelyn Garcia and Henry Lu of JŪN in Houston. The breadth of winners reflected the diversity of culinary traditions shaping the modern American dining landscape.

A milestone year for American dining

This year’s ceremony also marked the 40th anniversary of the James Beard Foundation. Foundation leaders emphasized the organization’s mission to celebrate American food culture while recognizing innovation, creativity and community impact across the industry. The awards continue to serve as both recognition of achievement and a predictor of future success, with many past winners going on to become household names.

As the restaurant industry continues to evolve, the 2026 James Beard Awards demonstrated the growing influence of regional cuisines, independent operators and emerging voices. From New York and Philadelphia to Houston and Portland, this year’s winners represent the talent and ambition driving American dining forward.
