Shamrock Shake is Back: McDonald’s Limited-Time Favorite Returns

McDonald’s Shamrock Shake has become a beloved seasonal treat, making its annual appearance ahead for St. Patrick’s Day. First introduced in 1970, the green, mint-flavored milkshake was initially created to support Ronald McDonald House Charities. Over the decades, it has grown into a cultural phenomenon, eagerly anticipated by fans each year.

The popularity of the Shamrock Shake has only increased with time, thanks to social media buzz and McDonald’s strategic marketing. Over the years, McDonald’s has introduced variations of the shake, including the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, which blends the classic mint flavor with crunchy Oreo pieces.

What’s new for 2025?

McDonald’s is taking nostalgia to a new level this year by bringing back Uncle O’Grimacey, a long-forgotten character from the McDonaldland universe. Originally introduced in 1975 as Grimace’s Irish uncle, Uncle O’Grimacey was used to promote the Shamrock Shake but faded from advertising after the 1980s.

Additionally, McDonald’s is expanding the reach of the Shamrock Shake beyond the US market. For the first time ever, the shake will be available for two weeks in the United Kingdom starting March 12, 2025, making this an exciting year for international fans of the minty treat. The launch will be accompanied by a social media campaign encouraging UK customers to experience the tradition that American fans have loved for decades.

Beyond the nostalgia and expansion, McDonald’s is also releasing a line of exclusive Uncle O’Grimacey-themed merchandise. From t-shirts to collectible cups, the new items are expected to drive further excitement and engagement with the seasonal shake.

Shamrock Shake and McDonald’s commitment to charity

As part of its longstanding tradition of giving back, McDonald’s will donate 25 cents from every Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry sold between February 10 and March 23, 2025, to Ronald McDonald House Charities. The charity, which supports families with sick children by providing housing and resources near hospitals, has received millions in donations from McDonald’s through past Shamrock Shake campaigns.

The Shamrock Shake’s history with RMHC dates back to the 1970s when the proceeds from the shake helped fund the very first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. Since then, it has remained a staple fundraising initiative for the organization. This year’s campaign is expected to generate significant contributions, further supporting RMHC’s mission to keep families together during challenging times.

Customers can find the Shamrock Shake and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry at participating McDonald’s locations nationwide, with some locations offering them through mobile ordering and delivery services. Given the overwhelming demand seen in previous years, fans are encouraged to grab their shakes early before they disappear from menus once again.
