Woods Foodservice combines family values, innovation and sustainability to help shape the future of premium hospitality
Woods Foodservice is a premium, family-owned wholesaler supplying the very top end of the UK hospitality sector – including more than 60 Michelin-starred restaurants. For over 40 years, the business has built its reputation on quality, consistency and service. Today, it is pairing that heritage with a clear ambition: to help drive sustainability across fine dining and position the UK as a global leader in responsible gastronomy.

“I took over as Managing Director in 2000 and repositioned the business with a clear focus on the premium market,” begins Darren Labbett. “That shift defined the Woods Foodservice you see today: specialist, ser-vice-led and aligned with the needs of high-performance kitchens. Now, both of my daughters and my son work for the company.
“We’re not just supporting great kitchens – we’re helping them operate more sustainably. We believe London has the potential to become one of the greenest restaurant scenes in the world.”
That ambition comes at a critical moment. While sustainability is increasingly shaping the fine dining scene, the UK continues to lag behind European counterparts in environmental recognition at the highest level, Michelin Green Stars. Woods Foodservice is actively working to close that gap – collaborating with chefs, producers and partners to raise standards across the supply chain.
Consistency, quality, and service
From being a specialist dry store supplier, Woods Foodservice has expanded its range across chilled, frozen, dairy, and fresh produce, including products such as smoked salmon, charcuterie, and fresh juices. More recently, it has introduced tableware, with further category expansion planned to incorporate a full range of fresh meat and fresh bread, thereby continuing to add further value for customers.
“We’ve invested heavily in operational excellence and infrastructure, underpinned by being BRC AA+ graded for the last nine years, and more recently, achieving B Corp certification,” he adds. “This reassures customers that we are doing everything to the highest possible standard whilst keeping an eye on ethics, morals, sustainability, and transparency.
“Alongside this, we provide tailored services such as ordering automation, data-led buying insights, product sourcing, an in-house consultancy chef and oil collection. This enables chefs to focus on their craft, while we manage the complexity behind the scenes.”
The recent acquisition of John Mower & Co has helped to further strengthen Woods Foodservice’s position in a very focused way. It enhances the company’s specialist dry store product range, increases buying power, and critically deepens its presence within the Michelin-starred segment.
“We now supply 60 Michelin-starred restaurants, representing more than 90 stars,” Darren elaborates. “That level of trust from the industry’s most demanding kitchens is a strong indicator that our model is working and is scalable. John Mower & Co was closely aligned with our own philosophy, which is why the acquisition made sense. As such, our focus remains unchanged: delivering consistency, quality, and service at a level that premium hospitality requires. The integration simply strengthens our ability to do that at greater scale.”

Investing in infrastructure
Woods Foodservice has also launched a new product line, called Spence, in response to a constantly
changing market, as cost pressures continue to heavily impact the industry. The range provides chefs with a dependable, own-label alternative to branded staples; maintaining quality where it matters while offering greater control over cost. “It’s about giving customers flexibility without diluting standards or quality,” Darren affirms. “Our next step is expanding our footprint to better serve key regions. This is about proximity, reliability, and maintaining service levels as we scale.”
Additionally, technology is central to how Woods Foodservice operates. The company has made significant investment in its digital platforms, including its website and app, to create a seamless and efficient ordering experience.
“Behind that,” Darren shares, “we’re embedding AI into our operational systems to improve accuracy, forecasting, and overall efficiency with the goal to strengthen reliability across the supply chain. We’re continuing to invest in infrastructure to support growth. A key project is the development of a new 12,000-square-foot freezer facility, which will allow us to significantly expand our frozen range and im-prove capacity.”
Achieving a B Corp score of 90.6 alongside rapid expansion reflects a deeply embedded commitment rather than a delicate balancing act. For the organization, commercial growth and rigorous sustainability and ethical standards are not competing priorities but fundamentally aligned principles. These values have al-ways been integral to its operations, shaping decision-making at every level. Pursuing B Corp certification was therefore not a shift in direction, but a process of formalizing and evidencing existing practices, rein-forcing accountability and transparency as the business scales. Maintaining these standards is considered non-negotiable, forming a core part of Woods Foodservice’s identity and long-term strategy.
“Sustainability is a long-term commitment rather than a short-term initiative for us,” Darren explains. “Our approach is focused on practical, measurable improvements across the business. This includes transitioning to electric vehicles, investing in energy-efficient infrastructure, expanding solar capacity, and improving packaging through reusable solutions. We’re also working closely with suppliers to strengthen responsible sourcing and reduce emissions across the wider supply chain. The objective is continuous progress on embedding sustainability into operational decision-making at every level.”
Premium promise
Looking to the future, Darren shares that the company’s immediate focus is on a smooth integration fol-lowing the John Mower acquisition, as well as on delivering against its growth targets in what remains a challenging external environment.
“Looking further afield,” he concludes, “we’re building for long-term sustainability, both commercially and operationally. That includes developing the next generation within the business and ensuring a successful transition of leadership over time. At the same time, we will continue to strengthen our position as the leading premium foodservice partner to the UK’s top hospitality operators.”
In an increasingly demanding hospitality landscape, Woods Foodservice is proving that premium supply and responsible business are not competing priorities, but complementary ones – setting a new benchmark for what leadership in foodservice can look like.
