Tony Calamita explores the UK health supplement market
The UK health and wellbeing market is booming right now and consumer demand for holistic health and wellness products is fast increasing – and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The pandemic has resulted in consumers becoming more aware of how they can support their own health at home and are looking to trusted health products, including supplements, to do this.
Supplements make up a large part of the health and wellness market and it’s already expected that sales of UK supplements will reach up to over £500m by 2022, with around 30 million adults now taking supplements every single week. Supplements are an affordable and easy way for consumers to support their everyday wellbeing, whilst targeting specific conditions that affect sleep, hormones, stress, anxiety, the body’s metabolism and more.
With wellbeing more of a priority now than ever before, new consumers are entering the sector every day. The recent change in lifestyles forced by the pandemic, has meant that UK consumers are now willing to spend more on what was once considered a ‘non-essential’ item.
Alongside this, consumers are now more focused on understanding the ingredients in the products they ingest and how they impact the body, and they rely on the industry’s expert knowledge and support to supplement safely and appropriately based on their requirements. Education is key.
As we continue to navigate ‘the new normal’, it is likely that we will continue to see new products enter the market. Providing consumers with adequate education on the products and how to naturally supplement at home is increasingly important. All supplements should be clearly labelled with ingredients and dosage information, alongside a product description. With the current economic challenges, the industry should also continue to offer consumers high-quality products at affordable prices, to ensure health and wellbeing remains a priority.
The supplement market is ever evolving, and product innovation is key Supplementsto growth within the industry. In recent years, we have seen health supplements evolve from a simple, one-per-day, multi-vitamin capsule, to hundreds of new health-specific products. There is no one-size-fits all, it’s about tailoring the product and its ingredients to suit different health conditions and consumer needs.
In the past, supplements have often been linked with one certain type of person – a health and fitness enthusiast who exercises every day alongside a strict diet, but that’s not always the case. People from all walks of life around the UK are beginning to incorporate supplements into their daily routine in order to maintain a healthier, balanced lifestyle. Young and old, men and women, those looking to boost natural fertility, people learning to deal with everyday stresses and maintain a natural balance and more – supplements, when used appropriately, can help to support people of all kinds and ages, with many different conditions.
Over the next few months and as we head into winter, we expect the supplements market to continue to grow as people look to health and wellbeing products to support their immune systems. The colder weather can often make it harder for the bodies defence system to fight off many germs and bugs, and consumers are looking for a quick and easy solution that can help support a healthy immune system and create a barrier against common illnesses.
We expect to see an increase in supplements that include ingredients such as vitamin C and vitamin D during the winter period, as they are well known for supporting the body’s natural immune system. It’s our job as an industry to provide substantial education, to ensure consumers health and wellbeing remains the priority.
